Anyone know any good places to go primitive camping/backpacking?

I live in Chicago, and am willing to travel up to 5 hours. I am not looking for a place that has rv’s and pools and game rooms. I am looking to go backpacking for a day, and camp out in the woods with nothing but nature around me. I would not mind canoeing to a sand bar. I just can’t seem to be able to find anything about it. It would be nice if there was water around, since I like to fish.

I would suggest The Superior Hiking Trail in Minnesota. The website with all your answers is . This trail will eventually go from Duluth to Grand Marais along the north shore of Lake Superior. Beauty beyond belief. Good luck
Porcupine Mtns in the UP, unfortunately this is an 8 hour drive from Chi-town.
Minnesota or Wisconsin have got to have some good places.
Hi Molly,
Here’s one place I never got to go, but always wanted to (and still do)… these are canoe camping spots.
The Namekagon and St. Croix rivers in north central Wisconsin are gorgeous. Lots of links with info to fill you in on the details.
Look up the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage too.. Another great spot!
take a trip to the pa Grand canyon 10 hours from the windy
you will find what your looking for there
Just pick up an issue of Arizona Highways. I’m sure they’ll have some good ideas.Their beautiful photography, insightful articles, and inability to keep secrets have been spoiling wild places in Arizona for over 50 years!
Many of the destinations mentioned so far are nice, but over 5 hours from Chicago. A canoe destination where you can camp overnight on a sandbar would be the Wisconsin River near Madison.
There’s good hiking at Devil’s Lake State Park, but I don’t think any primitive camping is allowed. You can probably hike along sections of the Wisconsin river and camp out as well.
Might consider the Shawnee National forest in southern Illinois. It is a nice and scenic area. And has dispersed camping . Primitive Camping. Good hiking trails as well.
Relatively easy drive from Chicago area as well.
Here is a website to view.
