The Appalachian Trail is a great place in the East. If you don’t mind doing just a big circle through a forest, Uhwarrie National Forest in North Carolina still allows overnight camping, I think. It would take you about 3-4 days to walk a big circle around the perimeter. And it’s flat, and not terribly isolated.
Backpacking through Europe is an adventure, there are plenty of cheap hostels you can stay at. Check out Lonley Planet or Hostel World for advice.
Good backpacking routes are in South East Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos) and also Australia and New Zealand
