im doing a 2 month back pack of europe as well starting in london in 2010...based on research im bringing 4000$ US to acount for food + drinks. add a plane ticket and a eurotrain pass and your looking at 6000-7000$ but this will supposedly do you quite fine if your like me and look for mom and pop places to eat and cheaper, local spots to hang out. also it is much cheaper to go with a couple of freinds, splitting a train pass thats shared with 2-5 people will cut costs into 3rds in my case. it all depends on how lavish you wanna live for 2 months

just make sure you have a comfortable pack, i recommend interior frames although exterior offer more space.
pack clothes for the weather in which you'll be traveling, also pack more clothes than what you think you'll need, being wet is probably the worst thing that can ever happen, but don't get too excessive as you don't want to be weighted down as much as possible.
also make sure you have a good tent and rain jacket... as mentioned before, being wet is the worst thing that can happen.
good boots are necessary too, they should be above the ankle and if you plan on crossing rivers make sure they're water proof (leather is the best, and try to get Gore-Tex because the material drys from the inside out) and try to break them in before you go.

To be safe I would recommend $ 60-80 /day. Eastern Europe is not any cheaper than the west.Especially now days $-euro exchange rate is not helping at all. Just came back from a month trip in summer. Austria -Hungary-Slovakia-Croatia
