How much money would you take on a backpacking trip across Eastern Europe?

NeedOutnow asked:

I’m planning on going as long as my money will take me. How much would you recommend for a 1-2 month trip?

Now that’s something i’ve always wanted to do. You’re so lucky. But, you shouldn’t use cash, maybe travelers checks or credit cards? They would be safer.

It depends on how you plan to move and live there for that time. I can travel for just $10 a day… ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD… but I know how to travel and I speak 4 languages, so I don’t need to go just in the tourist areas to eat or stay.

$1000 a month will do you quite nicely… less if you know how to travel. It’s a very subjective thing… and no 2 people travel the same way.

It depends of course on what you will be doing and where you plan to sleep. Basically on a shoestring budget you can sleep for $50/night or less but you have to reserve ahead. How do you plan to eat? Food will cost you a minimum of $20/day if you stay in a BB(breakfast included).

Train tickets etc add up fast when you are backpacking and if you drink beer or stronger that can also make a big difference. Based on my calculations from personal experiences $3,000/month will be enough but you need to budget closely.

TIP: If you plan to call home buy small denomination phone cards in each country. They are cheapest that way.

    Have a great time!

2500 $. The cost of living in the Eastern European countries is cheaper than in Western Europe.Only Moscow is very expensive place.

To be safe I would recommend $ 60-80 /day. Eastern Europe is not any cheaper than the west.Especially now days $-euro exchange rate is not helping at all. Just came back from a month trip in summer. Austria -Hungary-Slovakia-Croatia

im doing a 2 month back pack of europe as well starting in london in 2010…based on research im bringing 4000$ US to acount for food + drinks. add a plane ticket and a eurotrain pass and your looking at 6000-7000$ but this will supposedly do you quite fine if your like me and look for mom and pop places to eat and cheaper, local spots to hang out. also it is much cheaper to go with a couple of freinds, splitting a train pass thats shared with 2-5 people will cut costs into 3rds in my case. it all depends on how lavish you wanna live for 2 months
