I want to spend my life travelling, maybe backpacking. But how can I do this without money?

curious asked:

Like what do people usually do while backpacking? Are there certain part-time jobs that are common?

And how do people afford to travel around the world without beind millionaires? Besides travelling cheap, I’m sure there has to be an income.

Hi, you will need a certain amount of cash to get you going, but as your travelling you get part time jobs to top it up. More importantly though - is it safe? Will you be travelling alone? Where will you go because theres a lot of unsafe places to be in this world. Perhaps you need to thing about that too.

It simply can’t be done without money. You want to live the life of a bum but can’t afford to. You have to make some choices here. Why not go for a career that involves a lot of traveling? Possibly you can work toward the best of both worlds?

You could contact a magazine and have them pay your travels, and sending them travel reports with pictures. There must be a thousand ways, just use your imagination and you’ll be on your way. Good luck, and safe travel.

Learn to do something that is marketable everywhere. This is usually something that takes skills but few tools (since you don’t want to be lugging a big sack of equipment all around the worlld!).

I met a guy on the coast road on (near the Seven Sisters) in Australia once who was an expert bicycle repair person, and had fixed bikes for a meal or a bed in about 120 countries! (he was trying to visit them all).

Beats the heck out of a desk job, huh?

You will need money to travel, but perhaps try your hand at some seasonal jobs that include a sense of adventure. For example, I know that tons of young people go up to Alaska in the summer to work. You can work on a fishing boat, take tourists white water rafting, etc. A lot of the jobs are tourist oriented. A job like that would allow you to make money while exploring something new. If you liked it you could always go back the next summer. Many of these places house you and train you, but experience is probably preferred for the fishing, etc.

Another such option would be working on a cruise boat. I had a friend who did that and made some really good money at it. You also get to travel while doing it and then you can use the money you made when you’re done to travel around the world. Just pick up another adventurous job when you begin to get low on cash. Just try searching the internet for these jobs.

As far as travelling cheap goes, I recommend finding cheap hostels. Be sure to look online at their ratings though. If the price is really cheap you will want to see what people have to say about the safety and cleanliness of the hostel. There are hostels all over the world. Another cheap accomodation alternative is to stay in Monasteries. These are always well kept and, though bare, rather comfortable. You can search for these online and you can find them all over Europe. The only downside is that some of them have a curfew, but not all. In any case, it’d probably be worth the safety and comfort.

Well if you can get a career that allows you to travel, thats the best. I got to travel all over the world for free with my old job. Unfortunitely you do need to be making some income to travel. What some people do is make money well they go. You can get working holiday visas for some countries and work for 3 months to a year. You can volenteer for organizations. I have friends who have traveled a lot as missionaries. I assume from you previous question that you are a Christian. If I am correct then you may be able to find opportunities that way. My old boyfriend traveled around the world as a missionary on a boat that went from country to country. Try youth with a mission as well. Some people even get under the table jobs.

You could train up for a job that allows you to work in a lot of places - like being a scuba diving or ski instructor. Depending on the part of the world you’re in, you can also get short-term jobs teaching English and working in hostels/guest houses.
