What happened on your first backpacking trip?

. asked:

How old were you? Where did you go? What did you do, what went wrong, and what was great? Was it your last time or the start of a lifetime of outdoor adventure?

i was 12. we hiked 11 miles, camped for a night and hiked 11 miles back. with full packs. about halfway through the hike back, i almost passed out, sat down for a while, ate an orange, drank some water, and started hiking again.

I was 11, we hiked around for about 3 hours (no real trail, just following old game trails) and finally found a spot under a nice oak. the next morning we hiked back to our cars, which were only about 3/4 of a mile from where we spent the night.
I backpack whenever i get the chance and do a lot of tent camping.

Most memorable trip was climbing San Jacinto, we hiked 8 miles to our camp, dropped our gear and hiked 3+ miles to the summit, then back to camp. almost everyone ran out of water by the time we got back down the mountain the next day.

I was 8 hiked with the scouts kind of lame do to the fact that I was raised on an 11,000 acre farm/hunting ranch in Michigan but we had a good time stayed under the stars in the early fall sept I think. but the time my family all men went on a hunting trip in our woods looking for a Bear cousing problems on the far side of our property boardering a town we spent 4 nights out in the woods 4 per team 5 teams met up every night to talk about what we saw and the route we they had taken I was 15yrs carried a 30-30 lever action with a rizen scope 12 power and was one of the best shots in the group. probubly why I became a sniper in the Army Rangers. no tents just 2 dogs per group a good fire good food and a warm sleeping bag. I still can see every one in my memory.

I was thirty on my first backpacking trip to Glacier National Park and Banff. I didn’t do much except walk and look at the scenery. Just relaxed after nine months of teaching. Everything was fine until I was hiking back and dripped over an open root. Lost my balance and the weight of the back caused me to lose my balance, fell face forward, and just missing sharp jagged rock sticking up in trail. Made me think a little more about hiking alone.

    Other experiences:

Caught in a lightning storm above tree line
Caught in a rain storm on the trail. Rain turned the dirt on the trail into a slippery slope, like oil mixed with oil. Could hardly kept my balance.
Caught have way in a river when my muscles cramped up and the rocks were so slippery. That was real scary.
The usual amount of bear encounters.

I spent a number of summers in Canada until I got married. I really missed it. So I got into running an screwed up my knees real bad.

We lived in extreme northern Michigan so we did a lot of outdoor activities all year.

Now I am too old to do much of anything except walking. Bummer.

    Hello
I am a city girl who likes to play horseshoes, and yes it is a real game. I have never been backpacking and I am proud of that. Thank you
